Michael Motta, General Manager


Born in Pittsburgh, PA, Sportello’s General Manager Michael Motta grew up in an Italian-German family who often cooked together, with the kitchen serving as the central hub of activity. His love for helping to cook and entertain soon developed into a full-fledged passion.

Mike’s first restaurant job was in high school at a local diner, which inspired him to pursue hospitality as a career path. Following graduation from a technical school where he was exposed to various aspects of the restaurant world, he enrolled in the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY and graduated with a Bachelor’s of Professional Studies in Culinary Arts Management.

Mike stayed at the CIA for a year after graduation as a Teaching Assistant at the restaurants on campus, an experience he credits with teaching him to embody the hospitality concepts he now considers to be integral to his role.  In 2014, Mike moved to Boston and began working at No. 9 Park, Barbara Lynch’s flagship restaurant, as the Guest Relations Manager. Mike was promoted to Dining Room Manager in 2016, then joined the Sportello team as Assistant Manager in 2017. He quickly rose through the ranks to become General Manager in 2018.

As General Manager of Sportello, Mike enjoys inspiring professional growth in his team and overseeing all aspects of service. Although he finds excitement in the everyday, Mike is most passionate about shaping truly fun and engaging experiences for guests. He loves his ability as a hospitality professional to elevate someone’s day and to make them feel unique.

An ideal day off for Mike would include a hearty breakfast, an adventure to explore a historic architectural structure, and dinner at one of his favorite restaurants (ideally kicked off with oysters and champagne!). Mike is proud to have achieved his Eagle Scout rank in the Boy Scouts of America.
